From March next year every policeman and woman you meet will be armed with a deadly communications weapon… a smartphone. The National Policing Improvement has announced that over 30 forces currently use Smartphones, but that figure will increase within the next five months.

According to research officers with Smartphones spend 30 minutes less in the station. That’s all down to being able to send and receive briefings, access databases and send reports back while on the move. On the plus side we’ll get more officers on the streets the bad news, its costing £80million.

Inspector Jim Hitch of the Bedfordshire Police claimed, the addition of smartphones for each officer has been such a success that his staff is being more effective. One of his staff took a photo of a footprint and sent it back to HQ, where they found a match for the suspect on their database.

Of course, there are concerns over security, battery life and the cost of handing every police officer a BlackBerry, but it is all help towards creating a safer place to live.
