The music subscription service is the big thing at the moment. Who doesn’t want access to thousands of tracks for free, or in some cases for a very small price? Spotify’s leading the field leaving others like Sky and We7 trailing behind. Now, another project, Rdio is having a go, co-founded by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the guys behind Skype, Kazoo and Joost video.
If early reports are anything to go by, the service will let you share and archive music through a browser and stream it to mobile devices. Pretty much like the current market leader, Spotify. Janus Friis said, 'We felt the time was right to revisit this space, this time with a compelling offering and a sustainable subscription model.'
It will initially try it’s luck in the U.S, but it may still be some time before the final product surfaces as the service is still being tested and negotiations are being done with major labels. Spotify hasn’t made the leap over the pond yet, but there will be competition from current providers, Napster and Rhapsody. This doesn’t make the Rdio task impossible, but subscription rates are going to have to be competitive to get people interested.
