Email communication could become a thing of the past, that’s according to Proffessor David Zeitlyn from the University of Kent. He has put it down to the rise of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter who provide immediate updates and constant communication. He believes that social networking is far more fashionable, easier to use and faster all factors that contribute to the sites success. Thanks to mobile technology the sites are always accessible.

Professor Zeitlyn’s research suggested that although people do still use email, social networking sites and instant messages are first choice. The older generations are more resistant to swap from simple email communication to social networking probably due to difficulties picking up the latest communication methods.

But some members of the technology community do not agree, Dan Grabham from TechRadar magazine said “Email won’t completely die off, it will probably still be used for some important purposes such as sending crucial files to someone particular…But it is clear that for quick, direct communication Twitter and other social systems are easier to use and can garner a far quicker response – not least because inboxes continue to fill up with unstoppable junk”
