ACS:Law are on a mission, to find illegal downloaders and fine them. The firm has been granted access to thousands of user’s details from myriad ISPs. Anyone who’s found to be dabbling in digital piracy will be sent a letter with two options, pay up or go to court.

ACS:Law’s Andrew Crossley said that the drastic move was to "eradicate" the illegal downloading of products owned by its clients. An estimated 25,000 people using BT Broadband will receive the anti-piracy letter.

Mr Crossley said " We give them the opportunity to enter into compromise right at the start to avoid having to deal with it in court" the idea is that the fine will cost much less than a court battle which could “run into several thousands of pounds” and probably wouldn’t end in the downloaders favour.

However, there are concerns that hundreds of people may be wrongly accused, but may end up forking out for the fine.
