T-Mobile has admitted that the network is involved in the investigation by the Information Commissioner Office (ICO) into customer data being sold on. The network acknowledged that contract information was passed on to brokers who then cold called customers who were nearing the end of their contract.
The company alerted the watchdog as soon as it came to light and are now helping with the investigation. Information Commissioner, Christopher Graham said he is planning to prosecute staff involved and will be using the case to demonstrate that jail sentences will be enforced in cases where personal data is sold.
In a statement T-Mobile said “T-Mobile takes the protection of customer information seriously. When it became apparent that contract renewal information was being passed to third parties without our knowledge, we alerted the Information Commissioner Office… working together we identified the source of the breach, which led to the ICO conducting an extensive investigation which we believe, will lead to a prosecution. While it is deeply regrettable that customer information has been misappropriated in this way, we have proactively supported the ICO to help stamp out what is a problem for the whole industry.”
