Mobile phone firm TeliaSonera has installed two new networks supporting 4G in Oslo and Stockholm. The company said Swedish and Norwegian mobile phone users should be able to connect to the network in early 2010.
The fourth generation system is set to top ten times the speed of existing 3G connections. Despite the impressive connection rates, no-one will be able to use the system on their mobile phones, or at least until the handset technology catches up. For now, users will have to connect via a dongle and laptop.
TeliaSonera expects the new network to deliver a significant speed increase and boost everyday applications such as portable gaming and video streaming for laptops. 4G technology is expected to hit handsets in late 2010, by which time any problems will have been straightened out.
