Many of us would be celebrating thirty years of existence, not ESPN. They’ve ditched the party hats and streamers and instead are preparing for the years to come. In particular conjuring up a strategic assault on the mobile market. The sport channel has already dabbled in this area, with its ScoreCentre app, currently available on the iphone, which coincidently has now seized over two million downloads.

So what’s this all about? Basically, ESPN have cottoned on to the fact that everyone nowadays likes to get interactive, given that ESPN’s mobile Web traffic exceeds its PC traffic I think they’ve got a point. The iphone world will be the initial platform for them to improve their mobile applications, but if this all goes to plan, well, who knows? ESPN president George Bodenheimer says, “We’ve adopted a ‘best-screen-available’ approach–we’re trying to put our best product everywhere, wherever the sports fan is best served,”

The sports site has already made some impression in the mobile world, giving access to live score, fantasy sport alerts and audio content. But it plans to increase this in the near future by producing about 75 mobile clips per day, providing coverage of hundreds of events every year along with complete episodes of network broadcasts.
