The Government has managed to get 150 companies and organisations to help provide work and training for young people. Gordon Brown has already talked about plans to guarantee a job for anyone between 18 and 24 who has been out of work for 10 months. Now Phones4U, Royal Mail, Microsoft and Pfizer are all on board to make this a reality.
The move comes after official figures show the jobless rate among 16-24 year olds is almost 20%. Yvette Cooper, Work and Pensions Secretary said the main point of the move is to make sure young people today don’t share the same fate as those in the 80’s, when many youngsters were out of work for years.
The Government is "determined" to guarantee work, training or other employment options to young people. Yvette acknowledged it is hard for young people to get work, many are overlooked in favour of more experienced candidates. She believes, "That is why we have to give them the first step on the jobs ladder".
