Scientists in Japan have developed 3D technology that you can touch. Hiroyuki Shinoda, professor at Tokyo University wants to bring this technology to the masses, “Up until now, holography has been for the eyes only, and if you’d try to touch it, your hand would go right through…"But now we have a technology that also adds the sensation of touch to holograms".
We’ve already seen the progression from 3D glasses, to cinema screens. By using ultrasonic waves, the scientists have made the 3D images touchable by developing software that creates pressure when the user comes into contact with it.
The technology incorporates the sticks from Nintendo’s Wii console. The technology has so far only been tested with simple objects. But scientists hope that eventually this technology could be put into hospitals to create things like virtual switches for patients.
