The Samsung Pixon 12 is here and it is
sure to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, but don’t expect it
to be something of classic drama ‘cause this bad boy is packed full of special
effects. Also known as the Samsung M8910, the Pixon 12 is a thing of out and
out quality, from its sleek and curvaceous body to it’s stellar cast of media
features inside. All this does fall into the background however when you come
to realise who is starring in the lead role…a 12-mega-pixel camera.
Now don’t get me wrong, a mobile phone that
comes without a camera nowadays is much like seeing Phil Brown without a mobile
headset during a match, it just looks wrong. However this time it’s a
12-mega-pixel monster and Samsung have ensured that the Pixon 12 will be the
first handset on the market with such jaw-dropping capabilities. I’m sure I
don’t have to sit here and convince you about the quality of a 12-mega-pixel
camera but just listen to some of the features that Samsung have included along
side it; tracking touch auto-focus, geo-tagging, face, smile and blink
detection, a wide dynamic range and image stabilization.
The question I posed myself was, ‘Does anybody
need a 12 mega pixel camera?’ Well, we’ve been in the company of a number of
handsets with 8 mega pixel capabilities (the Pixon 12’s predecessor, the Pixon
to name but one) for over a year now and I guess this is the natural
progression. It has now become the norm for people to be able to capture those
magic moments of a night out or a day at the seaside with the minimum fuss of
reaching for their mobile phone. However, with this facility comes great
responsibility, therefore the consumer is demanding, and will continue to
demand, higher quality. With the Samsung Pixon 12, these wishes are granted and
gone are the days of a slightly blurry background or a distorted face of
someone sharing a jovial moment. Primary features such as 4000*3000 pixels, a wide
28mm lens, autofocus and xenon flash are all key elements rooted with the Pixon
12’s outstanding performance that simply does not disappoint.
Samsung, so experienced in the market, are
well aware that mobile phones will no longer stand up and shout ‘buy me’ on the
basis of one outstanding feature. With this knowledge have packed the Pixon 12
to the brim with features. Nicely sitting along side the camera capabilities
are the video player and video editor allowing users to shoot their own footage
and cut it accordingly. An 3.1”, AMOLED resistive touchscreen ensure that the
interface is easier to use than ever. Having tried it out, I can confirm that
the touchscreen is ultra-responsive, unlike some of its peers who have been
known to display the responsiveness of a heavily sedated gorilla. This all adds
to the overall flow when using the Pixon 12 with basic tasks such as making
calls and texts becoming far more user friendly.
My only real disappointment with the Samsung Pixon 12 was that it only carries 150MB of internal
memory. This was soon tempered by the fact that it can be easily increased to
16GB with the aid of a memory card, just a slight black mark against the
overall make-up of the handset however.
The inclusion of a Music Player is a nice
touch within the Pixon 12 and proves that it is a real all-round handset that
is not just caught up in the wonder of its camera. Once the memory has been
upgraded, thousands of tracks will be able to be saved to listen to in fabulous
audio quality whether the user is at home or on the move. Add a stereo FM radio
with RDS into the mix and it is clear that the Pixon 12 is dedicated to
catering for every wish the consumer could ask for. Java facilities, pre-loaded
games, a DivX/MP4 player, a PowerPoint and PDF document viewer and MP3 player
all contribute to the fact that the Pixon 12 is a technological colossus.
Connectivity is not the sacrificial lamb
offered up by Samsung as the Pixon 12 continues to deliver on all fronts with
Class 10 GPRS, Class 10 EDGE, 3G HSDPA and Bluetooth meaning sharing and
browsing is a delightful experience.
There is no doubt that the Samsung Pixon 12 will demand a
standing ovation from it’s captivated audience with it’s 12 mega pixel camera
and other winning features proving universally popular. It’s boyish good looks
could well prove that the Pixon 12 has all the right gradients in its armoury
to be a serious contender come Oscar season.
