What’s the deal?

A smartphone is a new breed of mobile, sure it can still make calls and send the odd text but in reality, that’s just the start of it. These super-phones are crammed full of clever tech which makes them more than a little bit good. Now they’re able to access the web, run small downloadable programs - known as applications, and store a load of different media, kind of like a teeny tiny computer.

Fronted by that little green robot the Android operating system is one of the fastest growing platforms, and because it’s supported by a load of different handsets it’s perfect for those indecisive types. Better still, it comes with a raft of Google services and a pretty impressive app market, allowing you to download everything from ebooks, games and social apps to everyday utilities and e-learning tools.

Apple’s iOS is used solely on the company’s own products. There are over 250,000 applications in the app store, a number which is growing by the day, an intuitive user interface and fancy multitasking capabilities.

Dominating the business market is the BlackBerry operating system. Key features include red hot communicative features, email sync up and the company’s very own messenger service. BlackBerry OS has now evolved to support a flock of consumer users, offering loads of media functions and apps aplenty via BlackBerry App World.

The Windows Phone platform is brought to you by Microsoft. Naturally there are a load of Office style goodies thrown in, allowing you to edit documents on the move. The operating system also breaks down everyday functions into dedicated hubs, enabling you to get quick access to your music, images and contacts, all of which can be padded out with apps from the Windows Marketplace.

The Symbian operating system has undergone some radical changes. Most will have encountered this platform on a Nokia handset, but it works across a number of brands. The latest update brings with it fancy multimedia functions and a decent multitasking set up. Applications are a given, and there are loads available for this OS.

The Bada platform is relatively new to the party. Brought to you by Samsung, this operating system is confined to the company’s own smart range. It powers both mid range and top spec handset and naturally there is a hoard of applications available via the Samsung Apps store.
